Love Wins: Thailand Celebrates Historic First Day of Equal Marriage Registrations

Hundreds of same-sex couples celebrated a historic day in Thailand on Thursday, as the country became the first in Southeast Asia to legalize same-sex marriage. This landmark legislation, which was passed by parliament and endorsed by the king, grants same-sex couples full legal, financial, and medical rights including adoption and inheritance.

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra declared the law as a significant step towards a more inclusive society, emphasizing respect for diversity regardless of sexual orientation, race or religion.

In Phuket, ceremonies took place in Mueng Phuket and Thalang District Offices, with a total of 31 couples registering their marriages on the first day. At Patong’s Jungceylon shopping mall, 24 couples – seven male and 14 female – registered their marriages, marking the first day of legal same-sex unions in Thailand.

While this is a momentous achievement, the fight for LGBTQ+ rights continues. Advocates are now calling for the government to allow transgender individuals to legally change their gender identity.

This historic event, celebrated across all 878 districts, signifies more than just a legal change but a resounding celebration of love, diversity, and equality in Thailand.
